Extron AV Systems Power Competitive Gaming, Content Production, and Student Engagement at Rowdy's Esports Arena
The University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell), a nationally ranked public research university serving more than 18,000 students, has expanded student engagement with the opening of Rowdy’s Esports Arena at Marty Meehan Student Center. Positioned as more than a gaming space, the arena is designed as a purpose-built environment that supports both daily student use and competitive esports.
Rowdy’s Esports Arena features 50 gaming stations, including dedicated varsity systems, as well as broadcast-ready production spaces, competition areas, and integrated audiovisual systems. Its size and versatility make it a leading esports destination in the region and a strong draw for student recruitment and campus life.
To support live competition, content distribution, and AV across multiple spaces, Extron’s technologies were used for switching, AV over IP, control, and audio-processing technologies. The result is a reliable, networked AV infrastructure that delivers high performance, low latency, and long-term scalability.
The flexibility we get with Extron NAV systems has been a big benefit. It lets us continue to build out the system and add more endpoints as we go.
CHALLENGES
UMass Lowell set out to create an esports facility that could support both high-level competitive play and broad student use. Rather than building a space solely for varsity teams, the goal was to create an environment that could serve casual players, student groups, live events, and future program growth. Balancing those needs added complexity early on, as the team worked to define how the space would function across a wide range of use cases. In response, they designed the infrastructure with flexibility in mind, ensuring it supports current requirements and can adapt to future upgrades without major rework.
At the same time, the university was adopting Extron NAV® systems as a new AV over IP platform, introducing a learning curve for both staff and users. The team needed to translate AV terminology, signal flow, and control logic into processes that made sense for gamers and operators.
As the project evolved, the team also worked through how esports-specific requirements would translate into a fully functional AV system. This included defining how gameplay would be routed, broadcast feeds would be produced, audio would be distributed, and control presets would operate during live gameplay and events. Working closely with integrator AVI-SPL, they refined system behavior to ensure the technology aligned with how the space is actually used.
DESIGN SOLUTION
Rowdy’s Esports Arena was developed through a highly collaborative and student-driven design process that shaped both the technical infrastructure and the overall user experience. Rather than relying on assumptions about how the esports spaces should function, the university engaged directly with student groups throughout the planning process, incorporating feedback from gaming organizations and representatives across multiple communities. This input influenced everything from system performance expectations to spatial layout and furniture selection, ensuring the final design reflected how students actually play, interact, and spend time in the space.
The resulting facility integrates competitive and recreational gaming within a single, flexible environment anchored by 50 gaming stations, including dedicated varsity-level systems. A central competition area supports organized, team-based gameplay, while adjacent spaces support related activities, including a glass-enclosed broadcast suite for streaming and content production, and a dedicated team room for coaching, collaboration, and video review. These components work together to support both structured competition and informal use, allowing the arena to adapt to a wide range of activities without compromising performance or usability.
The design also emphasizes a community-based, immersive student experience. Immediately upon entry, students see that the space is carefully organized to guide users through check-in, equipment access, and gameplay areas, reinforced by digital signage, integrated displays, and dynamic lighting environments. The open layout makes the space feel welcoming and easy to navigate, while features like comfortable seating and clearly designated areas support longer sessions and repeated use.
Beyond the physical environment, the arena operates as a managed space supported by staff who assist with technical operations, guide student use, and maintain a welcoming atmosphere. This operational layer reinforces the goal of creating not just a high-performance gaming venue, but a sense of community where students can gather, compete, and collaborate.
Extron Technology Integration
Extron technologies provide the flexible and reliable AV foundation required to support the arena’s wide range of AV applications. The NAV Pro AV over IP system, including NAV E 121 encoders, NAV SD 101 scaling decoders, and the NAVigator System Manager, enables ultra-low latency distribution of high-resolution video and audio across multiple zones. This allows gameplay, broadcast feeds, and content to be routed seamlessly for live events, streaming, and in-venue displays. The system’s performance has played a central role in supporting simultaneous activity such as live gameplay distribution, streaming to platforms like Twitch and YouTube, and multi-zone audio and video routing.
For system control, the Extron TLP Pro 1025T TouchLink® Pro touchpanels and IPCP Pro 255Q xi control processors provide an intuitive interface, allowing staff and students to manage complex AV operations with ease. In addition, the MGP 641 xi multi-window processor allows multiple content sources to be displayed simultaneously, giving operators clear, real-time control over how gameplay, broadcasts, and other visuals are presented across the arena. /p>
The control system has been very smooth and easy to use. The touchpanel interface feels intuitive, and we were able to refine it with input from our team to make sure it really fits how we operate day to day.
RESULTS
Rowdy’s Esports Arena has exceeded initial expectations in its first weeks of operation. Within just over two months, the space has welcomed more than 900 unique users, demonstrating organic demand without extensive marketing.
Large groups of students regularly use the facility at peak times, forming both casual and competitive gaming groups. As a result, the arena has quickly become a hub where students gather, compete, and collaborate. Beyond individual use, students are forming new organizations, hosting events, and inviting others to take part in the esports ecosystem.
As a way of tracking the arena’s impact and success, UMass Lowell assesses usage data through access control systems and gameplay analytics platforms. While still early, these insights are helping the university understand participation trends, session behaviors, and future demand.
The arena’s success has reinforced esports as a long-term part of campus life. The university is exploring future expansion opportunities, including additional locations and potential guest access programs to further extend the arena’s reach.
