Modern Learning, Historic Setting: University of the Aosta Valley's AV Transformation

The University of Aosta Valley, founded in 2000, ranks among Italy's most modern higher education institutions. Located in the Aosta Valley region of northwestern Italy, the university reflects the area's bilingual and multicultural heritage, operating in both Italian and French. In 2024, the university unveiled a new campus designed by architect Mario Cucinella, repurposing the historic Testafochi Barracks into a modern educational complex. This transformation from a military site to a cultural and academic center symbolizes the university's mission to foster regional development, accessibility, and innovation. As part of this ambitious redevelopment, the university initiated a comprehensive AV modernization project to support its growing academic programs and international collaborations. The goal was to create a unified, scalable, and intuitive AV infrastructure across 20 classrooms, a lecture hall, and several multipurpose spaces.

Extron's AV solutions guarantee environments that meet the highest Pro AV technological standards, combining them with energy sustainability and high reliability. Exactly what our customers ask of us. Between Extron and the AV integrator, A.DI.CO.M. GROUP, they delivered a seamless, future-ready solution that empowers educators and enhances learning experiences.

CHALLENGES

The AV integration presented several technical and logistical challenges. One of the most pressing issues was the limited physical space available for AV equipment, which had to be installed in compact 12U rack cabinets positioned under desks. Additionally, the initial construction phase did not account for AV infrastructure, necessitating the installation of new conduits and a complete redesign of the network architecture. The university required a system that could support a wide range of functions, including lecture recording, live streaming, local control within rooms, and remote support capabilities. These needs had to be met without compromising ease of use, especially for non-technical faculty and staff. Furthermore, the project demanded high reliability and energy efficiency, with expectations for professional-grade AV performance and long-term sustainability.

DESIGN SOLUTION

To address these challenges, the university standardized on Extron DTP Systems, known for their compact design, reliability, and flexibility. The AV solution was tailored to three key venues, each with distinct requirements but unified by a consistent technology backbone. In every classroom, the system is anchored by an Extron IN1806, Six Input 4K/60 Seamless Presentation Switcher. The IN1806 supports signal resolutions up to 4K/60 at 4:4:4 and incorporates Extron-patented Vector 4K seamless scaling technology specifically engineered for demanding applications. Working closely with Extron, A.DI.CO.M. GROUP delivered a tailored solution that combines advanced AV technology with strategic expertise, ensuring reliability and efficiency across every space. Audio for Aula A1 is managed through the IN1806, which serves as the core for DSP processing and routing. The system distributes sound via the amplifiers and ceiling loudspeakers, and ensures clear, balanced coverage throughout the room. Instructors control all AV functions through an intuitive Extron TLP Pro 725T TouchLink Pro touchpanel, maintaining a consistent and user-friendly experience. To further enhance speech intelligibility, the classroom incorporates the Extron VoiceLift® Pro Microphone system. Using advanced wireless technology and digital transmission in a dedicated spectrum, VoiceLift Pro delivers superior audio quality, extended range, and minimal interference.

The Aula Magna, designed for major academic and cultural events, features a robust system built around the Extron DTP2 CrossPoint 82. This setup supports advanced video scaling and extensive audio DSP capabilities. Multiple microphone and program sources are processed for clarity and balance, then distributed through ceiling and wall-mounted loudspeakers to ensure even coverage throughout the hall. Video signals are routed to the main projector, confidence monitors, and auxiliary displays, while operators manage the system via a touchpanel interface that provides streamlined access to complex functions.

For the new classrooms in Valle d'Aosta university campus, we faced the challenge of using the existing 12U rack cabinets, positioned under the desks. The physical compactness and thermal/energy efficiency of the Extron equipment have been essential to achieving the best technical installation result.

A RANGE OF EXTRON TECHNOLOGIES

The university deployed Extron's NAV platform, a high-performance AV over IP solution that enables visually lossless, ultra-low latency video distribution between multiple, campus-wide, inter-room locations and centralized control and switching. DTP transmitters and receivers extend local video signals to projectors and monitors. Control is centralized through TouchLink Pro touchpanels in each room, allowing users to manage AV functions with ease. Additionally, Extron GlobalViewer Enterprise software provides remote support and monitoring, enhancing operational efficiency and responsiveness. The system also supports lecture capture and live streaming, making educational content more accessible and engaging for students both on and off campus.

RESULTS

The AV upgrade delivered a range of benefits. As expected, the university achieved a simplified user experience across all classrooms, with professional installation quality and a reduced hardware footprint. The consistent AV performance across diverse learning environments contributed to a more cohesive and efficient educational experience. The university saw immediate positive feedback from users. The benefits of the GlobalViewer Enterprise platform were quickly realized, with enhanced remote support and system monitoring improving day-to-day operations. The energy-efficient design of the Extron equipment also exceeded expectations, contributing to the university's sustainability goals. Cristina Avella, AV BU Manager, praised Extron's AV solutions for meeting the highest technological standards while delivering energy sustainability and reliability. Consultant Davide Visconti highlighted the importance of Extron's compact and efficient equipment in achieving optimal installation results within the constraints of the existing infrastructure. The IT Systems and Document Management Office staff emphasized the high-quality AV experience and simplified technical management enabled by the new system.

In the new university campus in Valle d'Aosta, thanks to Extron solutions, we were able to create classrooms and a lecture hall that offer a high-quality audio/video experience while simplifying the technical management of the equipment and its use by end users.
